"Why" Easter Series

This pastor's Easter series for centered on Jesus Christ and the cross. Begun shortly after the release of the blockbuster motion picture The Passion of the Christ, the series sought to go beyond the movie version of Jesus' death and tell "the rest of the story." After a preview screening of the film, I decided to break with the trend of the day and not build our campaign around the movie.

Instead I chose to take a "rest of the story" approach, encouraging our members and guests to come and hear about other aspects of the cross and resurrection not covered by the film. To visually support the series I chose to create original artwork.

An artist in this particular church agreed to paint an abstract cross, which she provided as a 16 x 20 inch acrylic on canvas. Her painting included a warm color palette that was both modern and ancient at the same time. I took the painting, scanned it, and reproduced it as a 30 foot by 24 foot enlargement on canvas, which our team hung in our Worship Center as a backdrop.

Also included in the campaign were posters throughout the campus and doorhangers used in local neighborhoods. On Easter Sunday the illustration also appeared as a full-color graphic on the front of our Worship Guide. Additionally, the team produced a limited number of lithographs, signed by the artist, and made available to members and guests on Easter.
