This is a great example of adaptation--taking something that already exists and making it your own. In this case, it was Amazon Outfitters, Lifeway Christian Resources' Vacation Bible School theme for that parcular year. This church needed a theme for all of our children's ministry happenings for the entire summer, so I decided to extend Amazon Outfitters into Amazon Summer.
In addition to a jungle calendar, jungle stickers and jungle tickets and flyers, the entire campus went native. I used bamboo canes, muslin fabric and rope to build huts, lean-tos and other primative jungle shelter. Overhead we hung camoflage netting and wrapped colored gel around florescent lighting tubes to make the hallways glow green, yellow and orange.
For a large-scale set in the Worship Center for Vacation Bible School assemblies, the team used 8-foot tall rocks, formed from cardboard and foam then painted, to make a jungle scene complete with waterfall, river and primative boat. To complete the effect, the team projected jungle leaves on a large muslin backdrop.
Rooms were decorated with grass skirting and Amazon Summer logos which matched our overall look and color scheme.
