Aligning Dreaming Planning Organizing Serving Celebrating Learning Ministry Communicorps
A communications ministry organizes ideas and actions through a process called "integration." Integration helps a team to get the most out of every effort as they join separate elements into more powerful combinations of themes, service and activities.

Integration is putting the pieces together to make ministry happen. In communications one can often find ways to combine separate elements of a project or multiple ministry projects to yield results that are greater than the sum of the parts. In the secular marketplace this is called “synergy.”

In communications ministry, the team is not in the entertainment business, nor are they trying to connect elements in a way that increases their dollar value, so synergy is not the central goal. A communicator does, however, want to increase the reach of an individual ministry and its effectiveness within the overall purpose and mission of the church.

Integration takes ideas in many areas and fits them together seamlessly. Integration is taking all the means of communication--from print to the web to video to display to word of mouth--and making them work as one. The result is a whole that is much greater than the sum of the parts. A team can accomplish this in part through the process of integration.

How do you take an idea and make it practical?

Start at the end. Think about what you want to happen as an outcome, and work backward from there. What will it take to make the outcome real?

Chop it up. Divide the project into many smaller projects. Involve people. Think of ways to involve other ministries and people who would not normally be involved.

Build in waypoints along the journey to track your progress. Set reasonable deadlines, and then meet them.

Accept unexpected help. Often God's way of saying, "Hey, I'm going to do something cool with this," is input and involvement when you least expect it. Be ready to say, "Yes, Lord."

Evaluate. Solicit feedback from a variety of sources--co-leaders, volunteers, participants. Ask what they liked and what they didn't. Be open to feedback both positive and negative. It is some of your most valuable information.
