Random Input

A fantastic creativity technique for beginners and experts alike is random input--forcing the mind to apply random items or relationships to a problem. The mind is great at making these kinds of unorthodox connections. Random input is among the fastest ways to jumpstart the creative process.

Random input takes many forms. Random words, phrases or quotes can spur creative thought. And don't forget about random images, random websites, random books or random songs--anything to push the mind into finding new connections.

Example.

A random trip to the supermarket, or the Home Depot, or Wal-Mart, makes a great creative activity. There are thousands of products and objects to browse that have absolutely nothing to with your project--or do they?

Action Ideas.

  • Write down a question first to focus your thinking.
  • Generate a random piece of input (words, quotes or websites are a great place to start).
  • Keep an open mind. Make connections between your challenge and the random piece of data, no matter how illogical.
  • Don't discount humor or absurdity. The fun and the outrageous may be exactly what your solution demands.
