Aligning Dreaming Planning Organizing Serving Celebrating Learning Ministry Communicorps

I Thought You Said Branding Wasn't Important

Here's an obvious question: If I don't believe in branding the church and marketing the church, then why would I spend the time and energy to make all of these logos available? After all, a logo and look is "square one" for a church that wants to get into marketing itself, right?

The issues for me are purpose and balance. I do not recommend you enter into a logo process for your church for the purpose of marketing the church--that really doesn't lead to Christ-centered goals and activities for your congregation. However, I also think it's important to have a degree of professionalism applied to the work and promotion of the church. The marketing mindset has so saturated the modern church in North America. I can hardly have a conversation with a ministry leader on the topic of communications without getting over the hurdle of "brand" and "image" in order to converse about something really important.

I don't want you spending months of time and thousands of dollars on a church logo and identity package. I don't think it's a wise use of your time and wise stewardship of your dollars to hire a graphic artist to do a bunch of designs for you and swim through oodles of meetings on the detailed symbolism and particular image created by "the perfect logo." You have better things to do with your time and money--and ultimately you must realize that church logos are not tremendously impacting or productive when it comes to promoting your church.

So I've created a large selection of logos in all colors, shapes and sizes. These will allow you to accomplish the purpose of having a church logo, but without devoting a tremendous amount of time toward that end. Basically, I'm saying, "Pick a logo and get on with ministry."

One of these may be a good fit for your church--or it may spur an idea for a similar design. In any case, it's possible to take one of the logos and use it "off the shelf". I think this is particularly useful for smaller congregations that want to improve their appearance without spending scarce resources.

If you were to have the resources to design your own logo and don't like any that you see here, I would go to an online logo resource next and spend a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand dollars. Bottom line: don't get deeply ensconced in the issue of your church logo. The logo you have is not going to make-or-break your church or ministry. Some marketing professionals might tell you otherwise, but there's no evidence to support that supposition. A good, solid, simple, workable logo that reflects one or more of your church's core principles is going work just fine. I hope one or more of the designs I've made available here is useful to you and your congregation.
